New Zealand Flax

Common name: New Zealand Flax
Botanical name: Phormium tenax

New Zealand Flax is a large, bold plant with stiffly vertical, sword-like, green leaves that arise from its base. It should be grown under full sun for best color. Varieties will offer different growth habits and leaf color.

Dazzler Flax

Common name: Dazzler Flax
Botanical name: Phormium 'Dazzler'

Dazzler Flax is a New Zealand flax with striped maroon and scarlet leaves from 2-3' in height. Can tolerate fairly dry conditions but is best with regular irrigation.

Santa Barbara Daisy, Mexican Daisy

Common name: Santa Barbara Daisy, Mexican Daisy
Botanical name: Erigeron karvinskianus

This low mounding perennial is used as a ground cover since it reaches 2' tall and spreads 5'. It has fine textured, green leaves and white to pinkish, daisy-like flowers with gold centers that bloom spring through fall in coastal areas. In warmer, inland areas, the plant appears to be semi-dormant but will perk up as soon as the weather starts to cool. Control its growth with watering as it can be invasive in some areas. It looks best in full sun in coastal areas but prefers afternoon shade in warm, inland areas. It attracts bees. This is a great plant for rock gardens, planters, containers, or spilling over walls.

African Daisy

Common name: African Daisy
Botanical name: Arctotis hybrids

African Daisy hybrids grow 12-18" high x 12" wide and produce daisy-like flowers from spring through summer. These hybrids have lobed, gray green leaves and bloom in white, pink, red, purple, cream, yellow or orange. Arctotis likes full sun and well draining soil. It is drought tolerant once it's established.

Coast Redwood

Common name: Coast Redwood
Botanical name: Sequoia sempervirens

This conifer is one of the longest living plants in the world and tallest also, one measuring 321' tall! Typically, this tree will quickly grow 100' tall and 30' wide in commercial cultivation. Leaves look like needles, are evergreen and dark green colored. Flowers are inconspicuous. Brown cones appear in fall and winter. Bark is reddish brown, furrowed, and attractive. This tree does well in full sun in cool summer climates but needs afternoon shade in warmer areas. It needs well draining, acidic, moist soil. Great shade tree. Used as bonsai specimens. Can take coastal conditions of fog and marine layer but cannot be planted at beach. Foliage and bark are aromatic.

Coastal Strawberry

Common name: Coastal Strawberry
Botanical name: Fragaria chiloensis

This perennial, used as a ground cover, grows 1' high and 3' wide. It has tooth-edged, reddish green, evergreen leaves. Tiny white flowers with yellow centers appear in spring through early fall, followed by edible red fruit. This perennial can be used as a lawn replacement, in coastal areas as it tolerates sand and hot inland areas as long as it has afternoon shade. It needs regular watering. Birds love this plant.

Star Jasmine

Common name: Star Jasmine
Botanical name: Trachelospermum jasminoides

Star Jasmine is an evergreen vine that grows 20' tall or a ground cover that reaches 1'-2' tall and 4'-5' wide. It has white fragrant flowers in the summer and can tolerate sun or partial shade.
