Windmill Palm

Common name: Windmill Palm
Botanical name: Trachycarpus fortunei

This easy-to-grow palm of medium height will mature to a size of 30', and its slender trunk is covered with dense, heavy fiber topped with a crown of rich green, fan-shaped leaves that could spread 8' wide. Once it's established, it needs occasional watering. This is a great palm for a tropical theme near the pool.

Nandina, Heavenly Bamboo

Common name: Nandina, Heavenly Bamboo
Botanical name: Nandina domestica

Nandina domestica is a graceful upright shrub that grows from 3'-6' in height. It gets its name from its bamboo-like growth habit. When thinned from the center it bears a remarkable resemblance to bamboo. It is best used in groups. It can be used in a shaded patio or out in a shrub border with full sun. An interesting feature of Heavenly Bamboo is the bronze color in the new growth when planted in full sun. It also bears clusters of white flowers in the spring.

Superba Fescue

Common name: Superba Fescue
Botanical name: Festuca amethystina 'Superba'

The Rainbow Fescue is a hardy fescue with narrow, blue green foliage that grows 8"-12" tall. It has feathery, pinkish flowers that are 12" above the foliage that appear during late spring and early summer. This fescue is a very showy, neat grass for sunny spots during spring and fall. This grass does best in full sun or light shade with well draining soil. It is a clumping plant so it looks great in borders, in pots, among rocks. Once it's established, it needs little to no watering.

Dwarf Japanese Garden Juniper

Common name: Dwarf Japanese Garden Juniper
Botanical name: Juniperus procumbens 'Nana'

The very dense growth of this plant is highlighted by foliage of a bluish green color. Its growth habit is very low, spreading, and mound-like, resembling a natural bonsai. This variety is one of the best Junipers for small garden spaces. Junipers are highly combustible plants.

Calla Lily

Common name: Calla Lily
Botanical name: Zantedeschia aethiopica

This perennial will grow 2'-4' tall and has large, glossy green leaves with beautiful cream or white flowers with a central yellow "finger" that bloom in spring and sometimes even summer. Calla Lily prefers full sun or afternoon shade in warm, inland areas. It prefers rich, moist soil and does well near water features or boggy conditions. Cally Lily is beautiful for cut flowers.

Yew Pine

Common name: Yew Pine
Botanical name: Podocarpus macrophyllus

The Podocarpus macrophyllus is a small tree or large shrub that forms a slender column, 20'-30' tall and 14' wide. Its pointed leaves are dark green in color, with a length of 4" needles. This makes a good hedge, screen, or single specimen plant. It can tolerate low light so Yew Pine is used in malls or narrow areas. Flowers are insignificant. It needs regular watering. Foliage is aromatic, if brushed against it.

 Canna

Common name: Canna
Botanical name: Canna x generalis

These lilies will grow anywhere from about 2-5' tall and have large dark green or bronzy green, paddle-shaped, large leaves with flowers that come in a variety of beautiful colors such as yellow, orange, red or pink and that bloom spring to fall. It prefers full sun (it will not bloom well otherwise) in frost free areas. It prefers moist to wet soil and will even grow in boggy areas. This plant resembles a banana tree but without the bark. Hummingbirds love this plant.
