Common name: Passion Fruit
Botanical name: Passiflora edulis
The Passion Fruit Vine is famous for producing the edible "passion fruit". A purplish, egg-shaped fruit with a leathery hide reveals inside, a pudding-like mass, with edible seeds. It can be scooped out or sucked out of the halved fruit. This vine is often invasive, easily growing 20' per year. It should be planted next to a chain link fence or in a container with a trellis, as it can be trained. Leaves are dark green and evergreen. Flowers are fragrant and multi-colored and layered, blooming in spring, followed by the fruit. This vine does best in full sun in frost-free areas that are not extremely hot in summer. It needs well draining, rich, sandy, loamy soil.
