Welcome to the Sun Garden! Please read on to learn more about the plants in this part of the Inspiration Garden. Also, visit roseville.ca.us/inspirationgarden for great gardening tips.
Sometimes there's simply no escaping our hot sun. Is your garden exposed to many hours in the full sun that can result in the harshest conditions for plants? If so, embrace it! The Sun Garden provides examples of plants that can thrive in our hot climate and many months without rainfall.
When selecting plants for your garden, look for those with water-saving, drought-tolerant characteristics. Examples include:
Small or divided leaves that reduce the amount of leaf surface; leaves with a waxy coating or leathery texture that helps conserve water; tiny hairs on leaves that trap moisture; foliage that's gray-green in color to help the leaves stay cooler; deep, fibrous, or wide-spreading roots that extend farther into the soil, increasing the area from which the plant can draw moisture.
One of the best solutions for providing relief from hot summer temperatures is shade! The Roseville Urban Forest Foundation (RUFF) has a wonderful list of trees that are perfect for our climate and information about the many benefits of trees, including:
Trees provide oxygen and reduce global warming.
Trees clean the air.
Trees provide nesting places, safety, and food for Garden Life.
