Chinese Pistache

Common name: Chinese Pistache
Botanical name: Pistacia chinensis

The Pistacia chinensis is a deciduous tree with broad, spreading growth to 50' in height. Its leaves have 10-16 leaflets, and the fall coloring arrives in beautiful shades of red, orange and yellow. Prune young trees to shape. This tree does not have edible nuts. Female trees have tiny red fruit, turning dark blue. It prefers full sun and deep, infrequent waterings. This is a great street or park tree.

Upright Maiden Grass

Common name: Upright Maiden Grass
Botanical name: Miscanthus sinensis 'Gracillimus'

The 'Gracillimus' is a clumping beautiful grass, growing to 6'-8' tall and up to 5' wide. It has thin, silver-green long leaves that turn bronze with colder weather. It does best in full sun and well draining soil but is tolerant of sandy to clay soils as well. Does not need much fertilizer. It is drought tolerant once it's established. Flower tassels, reddish color, appear in late summer, gradually turning to silver. The grass can be pruned in late winter if needed. It tolerates coastal areas. Looks wonderful when mass planted or for borders.

The 'Marina' has gorgeous bark, with leaves that are smaller and not as glossy as Pacific Madrone. Its flowers are pink, borne in pendant clusters in the summer. The fruit is large, red and quite ornamental. The plant should be grown in sun to part shade, with little or no summer watering when established. The 'Marina' prefers good drainage. Trailing Lantana

Botanical name: Lantana montevidensis

Lavender flowers accent the trailing growth habit of this Lantana. It is excellent for spilling over walls or down banks. Eventually, it will reach about 2' tall by 6' wide; size is controlled by pruning and severity of winter. It does best in full sun and is drought tolerant. It grows rapidly, even in heat, smog and poor soil. It is cold hardy to 25 degrees F, but recovers quickly. Fruit is poisonous. Butterflies are attracted to Lantana.

Plant in full sun with well drained, fertile soil. This plant needs ample water and more during hot summer months. Blooms in spring and summer.
