Lemon Bottlebrush

Common name: Lemon Bottlebrush
Botanical name: Callistemon citrinus

A large evergreen shrub, the Lemon Bottlebrush bears masses of bright red flowers in the spring and summer that are shaped, as the name implies, like a 'bottle brush.' New foliage grows in a bright, bronzy red. This shrub can reach 25' tall and wide but can be pruned to desirable size. Leaves are aromatic and round. Flowers attract hummingbirds and also created litter. This plant tolerates full to part sun and is drought tolerant once it's established. It is versatile as it can be espaliered, used as a street tree, or privacy hedge. Some people are allergic to the pollen.

Fruitless Mulberry

Common name: Fruitless Mulberry
Botanical name: Morus alba 'Fruitless'

Morus alba 'Fruitless' is a deciduous tree that grows 25' to 50' tall and 35' to 50' wide with glossy green leaves. It requires low watering (drought tolerant), full sun ( tolerances heat), and will tolerate average to poor soil. Also known as: White Mulberry

Blue Elf Aloe

Common name: Blue Elf Aloe
Botanical name: Aloe 'Blue Elf'

This incredibly drought-tolerant plant grows into a dense mound 1' to 2' high and wide and has steel-blue foliage. Spikes of orange red flowers appear in winter and early spring. Hummingbirds love the flowers. It does well in full and part sun, even in desert areas. This Aloe looks great in containers or in mass plantings.

Shiny Xylosma

Common name: Shiny Xylosma
Botanical name: Xylosma congestum

This medium-sized, mounding evergreen shrub with lustrous yellow-green foliage produces new growth that is tinted rosy-red. It has a growth habit that is loose, graceful and spreading.

Australian Dracaena

Common name: Australian Dracaena
Botanical name: Cordyline australis

Cordyline australis is an evergreen tree that slowly grows to 25' tall. Leaves are long, sword shaped and light green. White fragrant flowers bloom in summer. Small blue berries appear in fall. It likes full sun and is very tolerant of heat, drought, wind and coastal conditions. It will live in any type of soil that is well drained. It may develop one or multiple trunks which are dark gray and furrowed. It is considered invasive in some areas.

Veitch Jasmine

Common name: Veitch Jasmine
Botanical name: Gardenia augusta 'Veitchii'

The growth of this plant is lower and more compact than the 'Mystery' variety. It grows 3'-4' high and as wide. Its foliage is smaller, but has the same dark, glossy green color as the 'Mystery' variety. Its white double flowers are 1.5" wide, and are highly fragrant. It needs sun to part shade for growth, and it blooms more profusely than the 'Mystery'. Gardenias do best with fertile, acidic, moist soil. Leaves become chlorotic turning yellow, indicating more iron supplement needed. Not an easy-care plant but well worth the effort for magnificent blooms and fragrance.

Coastal Strawberry

Common name: Coastal Strawberry
Botanical name: Fragaria chiloensis

This perennial, used as a ground cover, grows 1' high and 3' wide. It has tooth-edged, reddish green, evergreen leaves. Tiny white flowers with yellow centers appear in spring through early fall, followed by edible red fruit. This perennial can be used as a lawn replacement, in coastal areas as it tolerates sand and hot inland areas as long as it has afternoon shade. It needs regular watering. Birds love this plant.
