Botanical name: Kalanchoe beharensis

This unusual looking succulent can reach 12' tall and wide. Because it's slow growing it usually found in 6' tall and wide range at maturity. Thick stems are covered with large, thick, fuzzy, gray green leaves that are triangular-shaped with undulating edges. Inconspicuous flowers. Although tender to frost, it makes an excellent accent for rock gardens or desert themed landscapes. It is a wonderful accent plant. It does best in full to part sun. Looks great in containers. It is drought tolerant once it's established. Give it well draining soil but no fertilizer.

Marina Strawberry Tree

Botanical name: Arbutus 'Marina'

The 'Marina' has gorgeous bark, with leaves that are smaller and not as glossy as Pacific Madrone. Its flowers are pink, borne in pendant clusters in the summer. The fruit is large, red and quite ornamental. The plant should be grown in sun to part shade, with little or no summer watering when established. The 'Marina' prefers good drainage. Kleinia is a spreading succulent and ground cover that grows to about 6" to 18" tall with florescent blue green foliage. The ice plant like leaves are long and slender.It is from South Africa and works well in Mediterranean gardens. It is good in most sun conditions and can take very little watering or regular garden watering making it very adaptable for garden design. It performs best with full sun and regular water. Once it is established it is very drought tolerant. It is easy to propagate as are many succulents. Any section of the plant broken off and dug into the soil will reroot.

Canyon Prince Wild Rye

Botanical name: Leymus condensatus 'Canyon Prince'

One of the best known and utilized native grass selections in Southern California, this beautiful, blue gray foliage spreads out 3'-4' or more. It will reach a height of 2'-3'. It rarely flowers. It does spread by rhizomes but it is not overly aggressive. It can be extremely drought tolerant and care must be taken not to over water this species as it can rot from the center. Otherwise, it is carefree and requires virtually no maintenance.

Crassula ovata is an evergreen shrub that grows to 6' with time and with gray green, oval, glossy, leathery leaves with red margins (more red appears with more sun). During the winter and spring, small pale pink, fragrant flowers cover the plant. It likes afternoon shade, low watering, and will live in any type of well drained soil. It can be grown as a houseplant but will not bloom. Trunk and branches are thick and gnarled. Flowers attract bees, wasps, butterflies, flies and beetles. Looks great in containers.
