Red Star Texas or Autumn Sage

Common name: Red Star Texas or Autumn Sage
Botanical name: Salvia greggii 'Red Star'

This shrub will grow 1'-4' tall and wide. It has glossy green leaves with red flowers that bloom from spring through fall. It prefers well draining soil with regular watering although it will take drought conditions. It will become leggy looking. Prune spent flowers to encourage more blooming.

This is the most common buckwheat that grows in California. It is incredibly drought tolerant and hardy. It's long flowering season (almost year-round) makes it an important nectar source for butterflies and pollinators so be sure to include it when planning a habitat garden.Birds also enjoy the seed heads in fall. Flowers are a pale pink when in tight bud, becoming white as the flowers open, and them becoming rusty brown as the flowers dry out. This gives some added interest and fall color to gardens in the autumn that is unique to California. Birds also enjoy the seed heads in fall.

Deer Grass is a warm season perennial grass that forms dense clumps from the base. The spike-like flower stalks grow 2'-3' tall in summer. This grass has dramatic and handsome form. Deer Grass needs watering once or twice a month after it has been established. It is very water efficient but looks better with regular waterings.

Wall Germander

Common name: Wall Germander
Botanical name: Teucrium x lucidrys

This small shrub reaches 1' tall and 2' wide, with small, shiny, dark green, aromatic leaves on woody stems can be sheared and shaped. Lovely, reddish purple or white flowers appear between the upper leaves during summer. It can be used as a low hedge plant in herbal knot gardens or has a ground cover. To encourage branching, it should be pruned in the spring. It prefers full sun and well draining soil. It does not tolerate wet soil. It is drought tolerant once it's established.
