Coast Live Oak

Common name: Coast Live Oak
Botanical name: Quercus agrifolia

The Coast Live Oak is an evergreen, round-headed tree with regal bearing. It can reach 25'-80' high and 25-40' wide and grows very well from the coastal areas to the interior valleys. Strong herculean branches adorn mature trees casting much appreciated summer shade. It attracts wildlife in droves.

Canyon Prince Wild Rye

Common name: Canyon Prince Wild Rye
Botanical name: Leymus condensatus 'Canyon Prince'

One of the best known and utilized native grass selections in Southern California, this beautiful, blue gray foliage spreads out 3'-4' or more. It will reach a height of 2'-3'. It rarely flowers. It does spread by rhizomes but it is not overly aggressive. It can be extremely drought tolerant and care must be taken not to over water this species as it can rot from the center. Otherwise, it is carefree and requires virtually no maintenance.

Torrey Pine

Common name: Torrey Pine
Botanical name: Pinus torreyana

This broad evergreen can reach a height of 80' if it grows straight. Better growth results from life on the coast, from which the sea winds promote a broad, open, irregular habit. While tolerant of both heat and drought, the tree reacts best with moisture and slight exposure to fog. Pines are highly combustible plants. The nutritious seeds were harvested, being an important food staple for indigenous people in California, notably the Kumeyaay tribe.

Sticky Monkey Flower

Common name: Sticky Monkey Flower
Botanical name: Mimulus aurantiacus

Sticky Monkey Flower is a drought tolerant evergreen shrub 4' tall with numerous, orangish yellow flowers in spring and summer. It is a California native that attracts hummingbirds in abundance. This shrub can be found on the dry hills and canyon slopes in the Sierra Nevada foothills and the central Coast Ranges.

Pheasant Tall Grass

Common name: Pheasant Tall Grass
Botanical name: Anemanthele lessoniana

Loved by garden designers and so popular on the West Coast, this is THE GRASS to know and grow in USDA Zones 8-10. Fast growing to form a dense 3'x3' always-glowing focal point, you'll admire its gorgeous, slender and arching olive, amber and gold foliage. Carefree and long lived, its great just about anywhere you plant it - foreground, background, anywhere you desire a low maintenance textural subject. A wonderful sight massed on a hillside, it can be grown in large containers too. Not fussy about soil and if you cut it back to about 8-12" in Winter it'll stay picture perfect every year.

Monterey Pine

Common name: Monterey Pine
Botanical name: Pinus radiata

The Pinus radiata is an evergreen with an incredibly fast growth rate. It survives well in coastal areas and in well drained soils. With age, the tree drops its lower branches, thus producing a rounded, flat crown. This tree can reach 50'-100' tall and 3' wide. Pine needles are aromatic.
