Common name: Flowering Maple

Flowering Maple usually grow to 8'-10' tall and as wide. Most will tolerate frost to 25 degrees F or lower with some damage. All are irresistible to hummingbirds with their showy flowers and heavy nectar production. They will take sun to moderately deep shade and little or no summer watering in coastal areas. They should be given more shade and water in hotter, drier climates. They make an excellent plant for containers.

Carpet Bugle

This colorful groundcover will grow in shade or sun with slightly moist soil. It is an evergreen with purplish rosettes that spread quickly on purplish stems. Blue bloom spikes cover these plants in April and May, and are 6"-8" when blooming. This versatile groundcover can also be used in shady wildflower beds. Other names: Carpet Bugle

Deer Grass

Deer Grass is a warm season perennial grass that forms dense clumps from the base. The spike-like flower stalks grow 2'-3' tall in summer. This grass has dramatic and handsome form. Deer Grass needs watering once or twice a month after it has been established. It is very water efficient but looks better with regular waterings.

Bowles' Golden Sedge

Common name: Bowles' Golden Sedge
Botanical name: Carex elata 'Aurea'

This Sedge is a short ornamental grass the grows to about 3' tall and wide. It grows in full sun, needing regular watering. If planted in partial shade, this plant will need less watering; foliage will turn more lime green in shade. Foliage is evergreen, starting off in spring as bright yellow, turning green depending on amount of sun. May die back in winter but will come back in spring. This grass will grow in standing water thus making it useful for ponds and boggy areas. In some areas, this plant is used as an annual.

Cream Delight Mountain Flax

Common name: Cream Delight Mountain Flax
Botanical name: Phormium cookianum 'Cream Delight'

Phormium 'Cream Delight' is an evergreen perennial. It is a 3' tall by 6' wide, dramatic plant composed of many arching leaves, 2.5" wide, in a fan pattern. Leaves have a cream-yellow midstripe with green margins edged with red. It tolerates full sun in coastal areas but will need afternoon shade in warm inland areas. It looks better with regular watering. It can tolerate cold to 15-20 degrees F. This is a great plant in a shady location. This plant has yellow flowers that bloom in spring and summer.
